Meruem and Komugi: Deaths stands out as one of the saddest moments in anime history

In the vast landscape of anime, few moments resonate as deeply as the tragic deaths of Meruem the chimera ant king, and Komugi in Hunter x Hunter. Their relationship, marked by intense emotional growth and poignant vulnerability, culminates in a heart-wrenching finale that leaves a lasting impact on viewers. This blog post delves into the complexities of their bond, exploring why their deaths stand out as one of the saddest moments in anime history and how it reflect themes of love, humanity, and the fragility of life. Prepare for a journey into the depths of this unforgettable narrative.

Why their deaths are sad

In episode 135 of the Japanese animated series Hunter x Hunter, Meruem and Komugi peacefully passed away.

From my perspective, the primary reason their deaths are so tragic is that Meruem had already transformed into a new being before his demise. He had changed even before his confrontation with Isaac Netero, the chairman of the Hunter Association, which is why he hesitated to fight when Netero appeared. He simply wanted to resolve issues peacefully and return to Komugi because she was injured and unconcious when he left.

Meruem

I appreciate how he evolved after meeting her; rather than harming her, he chose to eliminate the bird that threatened her when he told the guards he’s going to kill her. His desire to protect her at all costs is commendable.

The second reason is that Komugi died alongside him. Her decision to remain by his side, even after he disclosed that he was infected with a contagious poison, exemplifies true love. It’s immensely heartbreaking; she likely felt that life would be devoid of meaning without him.

The bond that flourished between them made me blush and long for a beautiful, lasting relationship. However, after reflecting on the devastation caused by the Chimera Ants, I realized Meruem’s fate was sealed. I wished they had more time to express their love.

Komugi

It’s tragic—he transformed into a better being, yet his end was inevitable. The viewers understood this, and while he couldn’t win the game, Komugi offered him one final opportunity to play Cheers with her.

Why Komugi has no fear for the Chimera Ants

Komugi has no fear because she’s blind; that’s the first thing that intrigues Meruem about her. A blind girl playing Cheers. He attempted many things to frighten her, but she remained unfazed, responding in remarkably unexpected ways—another aspect that fascinates him.

Unable to conquer her, his aim became winning her in Cheers, which is why he kept her and didn’t release her until the hunters arrived.

If Komugi were not blind, she might have been killed by Meruem; the sight of the pile of bodies would likely instill fear in her upon entering, along with the intimidating Royal Guards and Meruem himself. Fear irritates Meruem, Komugi showed none.
